Sheila Kwiatek's Professional History

1975-1978 After graduating from college, I made the rounds with my illustration portfolio to small and large ad agencies in Cleveland, Ohio. Unfortunately, the Cleveland agencies had mostly manufacturing accounts, which was not a great fit with my work. I finally landed a job doing newspaper ad layouts for Higbee's, a local department store. If you've ever seen the movie A Christmas Story, then you've seen Higbee's. It was a beautiful store on Public Square in downtown Cleveland. I literally started at the bottom of retail advertising, designing layouts for the basement budget store, from an office in the basement. I was lucky to have a boss who was willing to teach me valuable techniques and give me constructive evaluations of my layouts. I also worked with some very talented illustrators who gave me portfolio advice and New York contacts that would help me when I moved to New York City.

1978-1979 I packed up all my belongings into my brother's van, then he and my mom and I drove to New York City with a new portfolio of illustrations and a few referrals to illustrator reps. We stayed at a cheap hotel near Times Square, and every day I went out with my portfolio. We also looked for an apartment, and I ended up in a small loft space on West Broadway in the Tribeca area. After some false starts, I finally went to a head hunter, who got me an interview with Gimbel's department store. I got a job there doing the same kind of design work I had done in Cleveland, but at least I was doing the work in New York City!

Sheila Kwiatek's Professional History

1979-1981 After a year at Gimbel's, I was recruited by a Macy's art director to work in their advertising department. This was a great experience for me. The tight deadlines and the talented people around me, inspired my creativity and my growth as a designer. By the time I left, I was doing full page ad layouts for the New York Times, magazine ads for Vogue, New York Magazine, and Playbill. I art directed photography with well known photographers like Albert Watson and Jeff Niki. I rode in limos with fashion models and shot on wonderful New York City locations. On Thanksgiving, I was a clown in the Macy's Day Parade. But, my ambition at the time was to work for an ad agency, so I contracted with a head hunter, and went on interviews.

1981-1982 I landed a job at a small ad agency called Levenstein/Gaines with offices on the corner of Madison and 42nd. Their biggest account was a furniture manufacturer called Pennsylvania House. It took me a while to adjust to the slow pace of ad agency life. I had done some freelance jobs while I was at Macy's, and I continued getting freelance jobs. When the recession struck, the ad agency's clients pulled back their projects, and I was laid off.

1982-1990 There were no full time jobs anywhere, so I went full time into freelancing and for the first time, worked under the name Flower Grafix. I had an account with First Boston Capital Group where I was the sole designer for their new venture called Shelternet. It was an innovative business at the time, because they used the first generation of PC's to write programs for real estate mortgage loans. Over time I got work from design studios, public relations firms, catalog agencies, startup businesses, and even Macy's used me to design circulars and catalogs. The 80's were the golden age of mail order catalogs, and it was a big part of my business. I designed the first mail order catalogs for the World Wildlife Fund, Singer, Knorr Foods, Oreck Vacuums, and Cutco knives.

Sheila Kwiatek's Professional History

1991-1999 I left New York for Houston, Texas, when I accepted a contract position in a new ad agency called J&K Direct. I had worked with the owners long distance and had flown down for meetings a few times and found that I liked the Houston life style and environment. At the agency, I designed furniture circulars for an association of furniture retailers in Texas and other projects. When I left in 1997, I started building my freelance work again as Flower Grafix. I worked for other agencies, like Visual Alliance and Guild Graphics, and worked directly with businesses on their graphic design needs.

Sheila Kwiatek's Professional History

2000-2009 I attended two semesters at Houston Community College in 2000 to learn the language and programs needed to design websites. In 2001 I designed my first website for an long-time client, and have gone on to develop and design many more, most of which are still live. Print is still a big part of Flower Grafix's business. My clients include Archstone Smith, Judy Nichols Associates, Houston Gold Exchange, Venture Dynamix, The Wings Program, Secure Messaging Systems, Apex Business Systems, Peran & Scannell Jewelers, L Michael's Jewelry, Gallery Auctions, LongForza, The Pamela Wright Collection, Wright Pawn & Jewelry, BMHG Law, and JM Group.
